Centre for Mass Communication & Journalism

Centre for Mass Communication and Journalism, Sibsagar Commerce College was established in the year 2021 with three Guest faculty members. Presently the Centre has two Guest Faculty members. The Centre of Mass Communication & Journalism is a newly formed centre in the College with three Guest faculty members and student strength of around 14 students enrolled session 2021. Now the centre has two guest faculty members and a student strength of around 15 students enrolled for session 2022. The centre, since its inception has played an active role in the overall development of the College by creating a conductive learning environment. We are already applying Mass Communication & Journalism Course as a Diploma Course under Dibrugarh University.

Objectives

The primary objective is to provide the students both theoretical as well as practical knowledge and exposure about the various aspects of Communication and Development Communication Theory, Models, Journalism’s History, Media Law & Ethics, and also of contemporary global, national, and local Media issues. To create aware and socially responsible, vigilant citizens by inserting the sense of co-operation, good communication skill and democratic values into their thinking and daily practices is another objective of the centre. The Centre also has some specific objectives which are given below: a) To create an environment for the students of Mass Communication & Journalism to enhance their personality beyond the class room teaching through different activities. b) To create a platform in which the students can initiate dialogues, intellectual debates, discussion and interaction within themselves, with the teachers and the people coming from various fields on various issues. c) To create a researcher- friendly environment for the student. d) To create professionalism habits amongst the students on the divers’ issues and of different genres. e) To encourage the students to develop their writing aptitude in both research and creative writing and also talking style to communicate with masses in reporting field.

Departmental Programme and Achievements


1. On February 23,2021,10 of under the supervision of Forest Department of Sibasagar got the opportunity to visit Panidhing bird sanctuary along with the students from several other schools and colleges in Sibasagar for a field basis study.

2. On October 4,2021 the students of Mass Communication and Journalism were organized a PR programme for promotion and overall analysis of mass communication and journalism at Sibasagar Govt H.S and M.P school’s student of class XI and XII.

3. ON 14th December,2021 a Panel discussion on Armed Forces Special Power Act, need of this Act in North East India content and present situation Organized by the student of Mass Communication & Journalism students for their part of an assignment.

4. On 19th February The awareness workshop on Anti Wildlife Activities and Illegal Trade in Wildlife(an awareness programme with journalist and media houses) was held at the digital classroom of Sibasagar Commerce College. The event is organized by Aaranyak and supported by the Mass Communication and Journalism centre, Sibsagar Commerce College. The event was attended by.
a. Advocate general of Assam and secretary of Assam cricket board (ACB) Debojit Saikia.
b. Secretary General and CEO, Aaranyak Dr Bibhab Kr. Talukdar.
c. Senior Manager legal and advocacy division Aaranyak Dr. Jimmy Borah
d. Wildlife crime analyst, Aaranyak Ms. Ivy Farheen Hussain .

5. On April, 2022 the Mass Communication and Journalism centre organized two days of workshop for the convenience of the Student. a) On the first day of the workshop 7.4.2022 two senior journalists respectively Atanu Bora, News Live and Bhaskar Jyoti Das DY365 in Assam. They have given an informative speech on Media House and Reporting. b) The second day of the program on 8.4.2022, ND24 Sibasagar journalist Kaustav Mani Kakoti has a factual explanation about Public Relation to the students. 6. On 15 May, 2022, The students of the Mass Communication and Journalism, Sibasagar Commerce college visited a residence for children with special needs and adolescents over 18 years of age named Kaumudalaya. They spent an intimate moment with these children.

7. On 17 May,2022 The 26th death anniversary of Parag Kumar Das, a well-known and famous journalist of Assam, was marked by a tribute to him by the Mass Communication and Journalism course of Sibasagar Commerce College. The event was attended by the Chief Guest, Dr. Ranjit Kumar Barua, Principal, Dikhoumukh College.

8. On the occasion of world Environment day2022, Centre for Mass communication and journalism organized a inter college poster and slogan making competition with the help of Sibsagar Commerce College Student Union and also performed a Street Play.. on this Prize distribution ceremony Mr. Naren Chetia inauguration a hand magazine made by students of Mass communication & Journalism. The event was attended by –

9. 19.08.2022, On the occasion of World Photography Day, centre for Mass communication and Journalism, Sibsagar Commerce college organized a special session on “Photojournalism and Photography “with well known photojournalism Manash Jyoti Dutta & inaugurations of wall magazine which was prepared by the students of mass communication & Journalism’s, SCC.
