Programmes and achievements of the department
The Department of Economics was established in 1969 with the establishment of college. After introducing Arts Stream in the college, the Department started Honours in Economics in 2016. At present, there are two sanctioned and three non-sanctioned faculty members in the department. Currently, the department is offering Honours, Non-Honours courses in Economics under B.A. programme and generic elective course under B.Com Honours Programme, and an Add on course named "Certificate Course in Data Analysis." Besides, the department faculty members take classes in M.Com and HS Commerce Programmes. The department aims to impart education in economics with a solid conceptual base and reality-based understanding of the issues.

To initiate the students into the acquisition and application of diverse Economic Theories

To empower the students with critical, analytical and creative use of theory to understand the socio-economic environment and approach the contemporary problems with better solutions

To provide awareness of economic, entrepreneurial and social conditions which will facilitate understanding of economic issues leading to policy making.

To equip students with skills and knowledge in the use of the economic theory and practice in the ever evolving job market.

To develop the potential among students for higher education, research, and career placement.

Achievement and Award


• Best paper award by Pankaj Jyoti Hazarika in the RDA’s 19th International Conference, Jaipur, India on 7th Nov, 2016.

• Tasmiya Begum Student of the Economics got 3rd prize in the District Level Essay Competition organized by Department of Economics in 2020.

• Pankaj Jyoti Hazarika obtained PhD in 2021.

• Manjit Hazarika and Manash Jyoti Konwar awarded Swachhyata Saarthi Fellowship from the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to Government of India in 2022.
